Small schools, big swings: why a 20-pupil year group's results can look misleading
If you're looking at a small primary school and its results seem to jump around a lot from year to year — 75% one year, 55% the next — it's tempting to read that as instability at the school. Often, it isn't. It's simple arithmetic, and it's one of the most important things to understand before judging a small school's results too quickly.
The maths behind the swings
Imagine a school with just 20 pupils in a Year 6 cohort. Every single pupil represents 5 percentage points of any given statistic. If one extra child happens to reach the expected standard in reading, writing and maths this year compared to last, the school's headline result jumps by a full 5 points — not because anything meaningfully changed, but because of one child's individual outcome.
Now compare that to a large school with 200 pupils in a year group, where each child only moves the percentage by half a point. The exact same "one extra pupil" story barely registers as a blip in the data. Small schools are simply far more exposed to this kind of statistical noise, through no fault of their teaching or leadership.
Why this matters for how you read results
A small school's single-year result can look dramatically better or worse than it "really" is, purely because of who happened to be in that particular year group — their starting points, whether a pupil with additional needs joined partway through the year, or even just ordinary variation between individual children. None of that reflects a sudden change in teaching quality.
This is exactly why looking at a 3-year average alongside the latest year's figure is so useful for smaller schools. Averaging across three cohorts smooths out the noise from any single unusual year, giving a much steadier sense of how the school is actually performing over time.
A rule of thumb
The smaller the cohort, the more weight you should put on the trend over several years, and the less weight you should put on any single year in isolation. A big secondary school's one-year GCSE results are reasonably reliable on their own. A small primary school's one-year SATs results are much less so — not because the school is doing anything differently, but because the numbers themselves are simply noisier at that scale.
None of this means small schools should be judged more harshly, or dismissed as unreliable — quite the opposite. It just means they deserve to be read a little more carefully, with an eye on the trend rather than any single snapshot.
