Single-sex vs mixed schools — what the evidence actually shows
Single-sex schools often appear near the top of exam league tables, which can look like fairly conclusive evidence of an academic advantage. The reality, once you look at the actual research, is considerably more complicated — and honestly, still debated among researchers themselves.
The headline numbers can be misleading
It's true that single-sex schools frequently post strong exam results. But single-sex schools in England are disproportionately selective (grammar schools) or independent, meaning their pupils often started with higher prior attainment or came from more advantaged backgrounds than the average mixed school's intake. When researchers control for these factors — comparing pupils with similar starting points and backgrounds, rather than just comparing raw results — much of the apparent single-sex advantage shrinks substantially or disappears.
A large UK longitudinal study following a national cohort of children found a modest positive effect of single-sex schooling on girls' academic outcomes at age 16, but no measurable effect for boys — and importantly, single-sex schooling wasn't independently linked to the likelihood of going on to get A-levels or a degree at all, once other factors were accounted for. More recent research using international assessment data has found broadly similar patterns: real raw differences exist, but they're substantially explained by which pupils end up at single-sex schools in the first place, not necessarily the single-sex environment itself.
Where the evidence is genuinely stronger
One of the more consistent findings across multiple studies is around subject choice, not raw grades: girls at single-sex schools are meaningfully more likely to go on to study STEM subjects — particularly physics — at A-level and beyond, and this pattern holds up even after accounting for how selective the school is. Researchers have linked this to reduced gender-stereotyping around subject choice in an environment without the social dynamics that can otherwise steer girls away from subjects seen as more "boy-typical," and vice versa for boys and subjects like English or modern languages.
What the evidence says about the social side
This is where the research becomes more genuinely mixed and, at times, contradictory. Some studies have found that pupils from single-sex schools report higher anxiety in mixed-gender social situations later on, and fewer cross-gender friendships, compared with pupils from mixed schools. Others point to benefits some pupils and parents report anecdotally — less social pressure around appearance or fitting in, and more focus on academic participation without some of the dynamics that can arise in mixed classrooms during adolescence. Neither side of this debate has anywhere near as much robust, controlled evidence behind it as the subject-choice finding above.
A middle-ground option worth knowing about
A small but growing number of schools now offer a hybrid model — pupils are taught in single-sex groups for core academic subjects, particularly in the secondary years, but share the same site, social time, extracurricular activities, and often a mixed sixth form. Advocates argue this aims to capture some of the more evidenced academic benefits (like the STEM subject-choice effect) while reducing the social separation that concerns some parents. It's not yet common, but worth asking about if a school you're considering mentions it.
The honest summary
There isn't a clear, evidence-backed "winner" between single-sex and mixed schooling as a general rule. The most robust finding is specifically about subject choice for girls, not overall academic performance. For everything else — social development, confidence, overall results — the evidence is either mixed, confounded by which pupils end up where, or simply too limited to draw a strong conclusion either way. This is genuinely one of those decisions where visiting the actual school, and thinking about your own child's personality and needs, will likely tell you more than the general research can.
